Start or Register a Business
Whether starting a business from scratch in Vermont or seeking to register a foreign (non-Vermont) entity to do business in the state of Vermont, the Corporations Division, as the state registry for business entity registrations and maintenance, is the place to start.
If not already determined, you must first choose your business type. For help with this, please review the information for the possible business types from the menu on the left of this page.
Please note: It is also recommended, but not required, that you consult with an attorney and/or an accountant regarding selecting your business type.
Once you have a clear understanding what business type you wish to register, the primary steps involved are:
- Register your business name with this office. To begin this step, please select your desired business type from the menu on the left.
- Determine if necessary, and if so, establish a Vermont Corporate or Business Entity Tax Account with the Vermont Department of Tax.
- Determine if necessary, and if so, establish an Employer Tax Account with the Vermont Department of Labor.
- Register for incentives and opportunities with the Department of Economic Development.
